File transfers – How to handle large point cloud data file

If you’re working with an outsourcing BIM partner, file transfers are a big part of your daily work activities. You might ask yourself which methods help you send large amounts of data files to your supplier. Is it a secure way to share your project data or something like that?

When to come to this problem, some of our customers usually ask us a question:

“How do you handle point cloud datasets? Is there a file-sharing service that you use?”.

Choosing the best ways for file transfers is not easy. Several popular options include email files, cloud-based sharing, or a more complex way like FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Each method has some of its advantages and disadvantages. The article will give you an overview of the popular methods coming with benefits and drawbacks corresponding. Besides, we also want to keep you updated on how we handle file transfers for our customers.

Let’s continue exploring it below!

1. Several ways to transfer data files

Method 1: Use cloud-based storage and sharing

Cloud-based storage and data sharing have become significantly popular in recent years. In a crowded cloud-storage market, we have to highlight some names such as Box, Dropbox, Google Drive. It has become a mainstay for sharing data files, models, and documents. In reality, some of our customers often use their cloud storage services such as Wetransfer, Box, Google Drive…to share data files with us and their suppliers.

point cloud file transfer - cloud-based sharing

However, any method has some benefits and drawbacks. Cloud storage is no exception. Let’s take a look at a list of the pros and cons of this not-so-new way.

Pros

  • Accessibility: As your data is stored remotely, you can access it from anywhere with an Internet connection. It is helpful when you work with outsourced BIM partners in different countries worldwide. Just share with them the link of data files in the cloud storage, then your project team can access them easily;
  • Cost-effectiveness: With cloud storage, you only pay a little or no cost for a small or medium-sized business. You don’t also need to invest in expensive server infrastructure. This way can help you save your annual operating expenses;
  • Fast speed: The file transfer using a cloud-based platform is quick. The speed achieved can rival onsite scores;

Cons

  • Security concerns: Easy accessibility also triggers some security threats. When you use the clouds, it means you’re storing your data in a third party. Anyone can access your data with an internet connection. So, it might lead to a negative impact on your project data confidentiality;
  • Internet-dependent: In case you lost the internet connection, you will access the file data. Besides, if your internet connection is slow, it takes a lot of your time to wait than usual to access your data;

point cloud file transfers - cloud-based

There are other advantages and disadvantages of the cloud options. However, we only list some typical factors you should consider.

Method 2: Use The FTP server sharing

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a set of rules which let networked computers exchange information. The use of FTP server sharing is simple. You have an account, then log in to an FTP server, find the correct folder, and exchange files. When working with customers on BIM projects, several customers share their data files with us directly from their FTP server.

FTP server sharing, like any other method, has some of its pros and cons. So it’s crucial to understand FTP fully. Let’s continue exploring the benefits and drawbacks of FTP and learn how these factors impact your work.

point cloud file transfers - ftp server
Pros

  • Large file transfers: Point cloud data generated by laser scanners are getting bigger. Large projects can include hundreds of gigabytes of data all at once. FTP eases those large transfers with a rapid speed compared with cloud-based methods.
  • Resumed file transfers: If your file transfer is interrupted, don’t worry too much about losing progress. By using FTP server sharing, you can recover an interrupted file transfer if your connection fails.
  • Safety: With FTP, all files stored in your FTP storage account are safe. There is no risk of fire/water damages or theft.

Cons

  • Control: With several FTP solutions, you can not track what has been uploaded on the remote system, so you need to require reporting with an FTP vendor.
  • FTP vendors: There are differences between vendors. Each vendor offers its own set of features and lacks many of the features you need like controls, usability, etc.

2. The latest update from ViBIM on file transfers

We have already invested in our FTP server to transfer a large volume of laser scanned data/point cloud files to a customer. It is a convenient, fast, secure, confidential, flexible delivery gate that directly connects our server to the customers’ PC / server. We will share the host with the client for uploading the scanned files when implemented.

point cloud file transfers - ftp-server

At ViBIM, we are very seriously interested in protecting client data and NDA. Our server is very protected. Only authorized project managers can deliver data/models to clients under a secured server. No one in our company can copy data to USB or upload/attach it on the internet thanks to firewall restrictions.

Besides, we can still use some cloud storage such as Box, Google Drive, Wetransfer… We can host cloud sharing if it is much convenient in our collaboration approach.

Conclusion

In general, any method has some advantages and disadvantages. You should choose the one that best suits you. If large projects involve many stakeholders and the exchange of quite a few files, you can consider file transfers via an FTP server. Make sure that you have access to enough storage space to keep your large datasets.

Quality Assurance / Quality Control process for Scan to BIM projects

The quality of a Scan to BIM model is one of the most important factors when you choose a BIM services provider. There are no standards to stick to, nor any tools that automate this task. However, at ViBIM, we always prioritize quality over everything. Thus, we build effective Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) process for every Scan to BIM project.

The article aims to offer you a general understanding of the QA/QC process. Besides, we want to share how we conduct the QA/QC process for Scan to BIM projects. Hope that it aids you to control the quality of a BIM model created from point cloud data better. Let’s keep reading to find out more information.

1. Why is Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) needed?

The process of creating a 3D BIM model involves several steps. At each one, there is more likely to appear inadvertent errors. These errors can impact the accuracy of the final model. It’s why we need to conduct the Quality assurance / Quality control (QA/QC) process. It ensures that you get a high-quality BIM model. By undertaking the QA/QC process, you can

  • Eliminate errors, clash issues in the process of modeling;
  • Assure to follow the standards while creating BIM models;
  • Ensure enough geometric elements, the correct position, functionality;
  • Make sure that a BIM model meets the client’s accurate requirements;

2. What is the QA/QC process for Scan to BIM projects?

Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) are two concepts that are often used parallelly. Although they are the same, there are distinct differences between the two concepts.

Quality Assurance (QA) shows you how a BIM model is created from laser-scanned point cloud data. In other words, the QA identifies standards or methods that need to be followed to meet the client’s requirements. The QA is often used to monitor and verify how you are doing is right.

If the QA is a process to create the deliverables, Quality Control (QC) is the process to verify those deliverables. The purpose of the QC process is to identify and fix errors, clash issues between building trades. The QC process makes sure the results of what you’ve done are what your client expected.

In general, the two terms are related to each other but they are different in the purpose. The QA process focuses on preventing errors whereas the QC process aims to determine and address the errors.

3. How does Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) work?

The QA/QC is one of the indispensable parts of our Point Cloud to BIM projects. The QA/QC process is always conducted during the modeling process and before delivering the final BIM models to the clients. We define specific QA/QC processes for both Architectural and MEP disciplines. Let’s get into the juicy details.

QA/QC process for Architectural building system

The QA/QC process for the Architectural building system currently involves key three checks. It includes the quality checking by Naviswork, Revit, and the final step after detaching the file. Checking by Naviswork ensures that the BIM models are enough building elements, in the correct location, and don’t have any clash issues. Besides, checking by Revit makes sure that the BIM models are the correct structure and functionality.

Quality assurance/ quality control for architecture

The QA/QC process will begin once after having already finished the process of modeling. The QA/QC specialist can undertake two processes (Revit, Naviswork) parallel to each other before moving to the final checking step. After having already completed the QA/QC process, we export the file and create a QA/QC checklist to send the client for confirmation.

Curious about the Quality Assurance / Quality Control for Scan to BIM projects?

Our QA/QC specialist is here to help you understand better the QA/QC process for the Architectural and MEP system.

QA/QC process for MEP building system

Like the Architectural discipline, the MEP system has also its own QA/QC process. This involves two main reviews including geometry checking and structural checking. The process assures that the BIM models are enough geometry elements, the correct structure, connection, and don’t have any clashes. The software for the QA/QC process includes Revit and Naviswork. Also, the QA/QC specialist will conduct the final checking step to get a quality BIM model before delivering it to the client. Let’s take a look at our QA/QC process as described below.

LOD Querying Checklist – A great assistant for BIM projects

Level of Detail (LOD) is not a new term for anyone who has been involving in BIM projects. But it is obvious that there is still a different grasp between the parties in each project. In the previous blog post, LOD and LOI, and everything you need to know about, we help you clarify different types of Level of Detail (LOD) and its benefits

This article provides you with another aspect of this topic. It gives you an overview of distinct differences between the two terms Level of Detail and Level of Development. Besides, you can also know better about different LOD throughout our BIM projects. Finally, there will be an introduction to the Level of Detail (LOD) querying checklist. It is an assistant to determine clients’ requirements before commencement.

1. Level of Detail vs. Level of Development

LOD is sometimes referred to as Level of Detail and Level of Development. In this article, we use LOD to refer to the “Level of Detail”. There are important differences between the two terms. Let’s dig into two terms below:

Level of Detail

The term “Level of Detail” (LOD) demonstrates the degree to which the element model is detailed and specific. It measures the amount of information provided, increases from a symbolic model to an actual model. For example, modeling the steel framing columns:

  • LOD 100: You can model a basic shape like a “box”;
  • LOD 200: Known as a generic model with approximate size, shape, position. You can also add non-graphic information to the model element;
  • LOD 300: As a specific object with accurate size, shape, position, the orientation of main vertical structural elements. You can also add non-graphic information to the model elements like steel materials;
  • LOD 350: As an actual model including base plates, gusset plates, shape, position, and interfaces with other building systems;
  • LOD 400: Including detailing, fabrication, assembly, and installation information. You can also add non-graphic information to the model element;

Level of Development

The term “Level of Development” illustrates the development of the BIM model from the conceptual design stage to the completion of construction. The LOD allows professionals to develop reliable models at different stages of the project lifecycle. Various LOD specifications have been proposed and adopted in the industry. A typical LOD specification includes five levels:

  • LOD 100: Conceptual design. The model can be used to perform whole building types of analysis (volume, building orientation, cost per square foot, etc.);
  • LOD 200: Schematic design or design development. The model helps users analyze the systems by application of generalized performance criteria;
  • LOD 300: Construction documents and shop drawings. The model is suitable for analysis and simulation for detailed elements and systems;
  • LOD 400: Fabrication and assembly. As normal, trade contractor or fabricator uses the model;
  • LOD 500: As-built model. The model is suitable for the maintenance and operations of the facility;

Source: https://www.aia.org/

In short, the two terms are used in the development of BIM models. They show the same model development process but from different perspectives. Level of Detail refers to the geometry of the element while Level of Development refers to both the geometry and the other information. For instance, the application of the model, type of information derived from each level. Architects, engineers, and others can use LOD to clearly communicate with each other without debates.

2. Understanding LOD throughout the BIM projects

3. LOD Querying Checklist – An assistant to clarify clients’ requirements

Knowing the right clients’ requirements is important. Let’s imagine that your client has asked you to develop a BIM model with “Level of Detail (LOD) 350”. You and your client all know about the concept of LOD 350. But it is still can not ensure that both you and your client are getting the same understanding.

Thus, it’s necessary to clarify the LOD requirements with clients before modeling. Besides, a BIM project can have various LOD needs depending on each area or position. By using the LOD querying checklist, the modeler will define the required LOD of each building element. The client can confirm or feedback on what the modeler provides. In this way, you can avoid confusion or debates between the client and the modeler. The following is an example of a LOD Querying Checklist we’ve used in Scan to BIM projects.

level of detail (LOD) querying checklist

When every requirement is clearly defined, the process of modeling gets started. In the process of modeling, the modeler uses the 3D view, the section to review LOD, and use Schedule to analyze LOI requirements.

Final thoughts

Obviously, understanding the required LOD is important in each BIM projects. Using LOD, designers and engineers can work with other stakeholders about the usability and limitations of a model. As an industry standard, the LOD is mostly utilized as an efficient and collaborative communication tool.

Differences between Scan to BIM for the design and construction phase

Scan to BIM improves the process of new construction projects or renovations in several ways. It adds value in every aspect throughout the building’s lifecycle. It helps users save time and cost thanks to well-informed decision-making.

The BIM models created from the Scan to BIM process have been applied for various purposes according to different project phases (i.e, design, construction, operation, and management). Knowing the intended applications of BIM models will enable you to identify the right information requirements in the models.

That’s why we’ve put together this article for you on the differences between how the Scan to BIM is applied for the design phase and the construction phase. With extensive experience in creating 3D BIM models, we will have suggestions for you on 3D BIM models that are suitable for the intended applications.

But before jumping into BIM models, let’s get started with how the Scan to BIM can be beneficial at each project phase below.

1. How Scan to BIM benefits the design phase

Let’s say you are hired for a project at School. Your clients need to gather documentation on the existing construction conditions. This information is later used to design the building that meets the site conditions. What’s happened if BIM models were created on outdated or fragmented information. It is more likely to waste you much time, even then, trigger significant consequences for all users. So as for this type of situation, the Scan to BIM is a good choice.

The information from the Scan to BIM process is highly accurate and detailed. It enables designers to be aware of the existing site conditions better to make an optimal building design. For instance, a renovation project in the UK applied the Scan to BIM to create reliable and accurate data. All models required LOD 4 in the UK standard.

Scan to BIM for Administrative Building in the UK

Not only the design phase but the Scan to BIM also continue adding values to the rest phase of the project lifecycle. It plays a more and more vital role in every aspect of the construction project. What’s more, it improves communication with the rest of the project team to ensure well-informed decision making. Keep reading the following section to discover the Scan to BIM uses in the construction phase.

2. How Scan to BIM benefits the construction phase

In the construction phase, the Scan to BIM has been adopted for various purposes. Especially, it can help to solve time-consuming and arduous tasks. For instance, you need to collect data to review the actual project progress. To get the job done, you are more likely to have to visit on-site construction to take measurements. This requires careful planning on when you visit the site, the amount of time you’re allowed to spend there, the number of personnel needed for the task.

All this costs your time, resources, and budget. But, by using the Scan to BIM, you can spend fewer efforts on these tasks. Some use-case scenarios of the Scan to BIM in the construction phase include:

  • Quality assessment/ quality control (QA/QC);
  • Early problem detection;
  • Progress tracking on a project;
  • Virtual environments for installation and assembly;

We’ve already analyzed in detail these applications in the previous article How Scan to BIM is used in the construction phase. Now hope that you can know the different applications of the Scan to BIM in each project phase. The next step is that you need to identify the information requirements of the BIM models.

Bonus: How Scan to BIM is used in the construction phase

3. Differences of required information in BIM models

The different uses of the Scan to BIM require different information in the BIM models. Thus, it is essential to identify all the requirements for the intended BIM models before getting started with the process of Scan to BIM. This enables you to avoid collecting too much information or insufficient information that impacts the quality of the BIM models.

So what requirements do you need to determine? There are three aspects we need to identify including:

  • Required building elements: Refers to the building elements that should be modeled in BIM models. For instance, stair, exterior windows, exterior walls
  • Required level of detail (LOD): Lets you know the degree to which the building element is detailed. Five popular levels include LOD 100, LOD 200, LOD 300, LOD 400, LOD 500;
  • Required non-geometric attributes: Refers to some properties such as materials, colors of the building elements;

As mentioned above, the Scan to BIM application is different between the design and construction phases. So what information are BIM models included for these phases?

3D BIM models for the design phase

According to the NBS report, 71% of designers expect that manufacturers should create fully-functional parameterized 3D BIM objects. In other words, 3D BIM models for the design phase include two key factors:

  • The functionality of 3D BIM objects. For instance, assigning internal or external function to BIM objects, adding tolerance of all warped objects, etc;
  • Valuable and rich information. Some information includes size parameter, materials, naming conventions, etc;

The BIM models can need high LOD specification such as LOD 300, LOD 400. Creating parametric 3D models makes reviewing become quick, accurate, and intuitive. Also, it gives designers the flexibility to respond to on-going design challenges.

How Scan to BIM is used in the construction phase

As many construction projects have adopted BIM technology, we witness a natural surge of Scan to BIM. The Scan to BIM refers to the use of 3D laser scanning to capture existing conditions of buildings as point cloud data and the creation of BIM models from these data. In construction projects, the Scan to BIM brings benefits to each and every project phase such as design, construction, operation, and management phase. However, each phase has different requirements depending on the purpose of use.

In this article, we will shed some light on how Scan to BIM is applied in the construction phase. This might point out some great ideas that help you improve your Scan to BIM projects. Let’s keep reading on it to get more information.

1. The purpose of Scan to BIM in the construction phase

To get the most out of Scan to BIM models, you need to identify the purpose of using the models first. When understanding clearly how Scan to BIM models will be applied, you will determine the right approach. Let’s take a look at some following use-case scenarios of Scan to BIM in the construction phase.

Quality assessment/ quality control (QA/QC)

One of the popular applications of Scan to BIM in the construction phase is for quality assessment/quality control (QA/QC). The 3D models created from Scan to BIM process are often compared to the previously designed 3D BIM models to identify any discrepancy between them. Also, these 3D models are used to determine the tolerance values specified in the requirements when modeling.

Early problem detection

Let’s imagine you’re hired for a project at a Hospital. The Scan to BIM process allows you to create a 3D BIM model to present to the project team. The model pointed out to all of your project team more than 10 conflicts where the pipework running through a steel beam. With a clear picture of the problem, stakeholders will know what they should do to make a constructible model. For example, the design team will need to make the change and quickly approve a change order. More importantly, the project team avoids costing more money than planned to solve these issues if they weren’t detected before the build.

Scan to BIM construction phase - clash detection

Monitor progress on a project

Progress tracking is a vital part of the construction phase to assure the project’s progress. The Scan to BIM will be a good choice for this. By scanning the on-site construction works and create 3D BIM models, you might compare them with the designed BIM models to review the project schedule. As a result, you are able to see the actual progress in comparison with the plan and know exactly what the construction works need to be completed.

Create virtual environments for installation

Several contractors utilize the Scan to BIM to simulate the installation and assemblies in virtual conditions. In this way, contractors can recognize any potential problem such as clashes between the components to solve them before creating the actual installation. In this way, the Scan to BIM helps contractors save construction time and costs thanks to early problem identification for installation and assembly.

Generally speaking, use-case scenarios for Scan to BIM in the construction phase is diverse. It can be used for both new constructions and renovations and the purpose is flexible depending on the requirements of each project. With understanding the purpose of Scan to BIM, now you can identify the right laser scanning solutions and create suitable deliverables.

2. Think about purpose-built BIM models

Now it’s time to determine the necessary point cloud data and BIM modeling process. This enables you to create BIM models with the right and sufficient data. In general, we see that the deliverables are varied depending on the requirements of each project. However, to create BIM models that meet the right client requirements, you should create a querying checklist to clarify any concerns like LOD or LOI requirements between you and your clients.

BIM outsourcing services

For instance, some contractors will need a BIM model for clash detection so the final BIM model may be less detailed than the BIM models created for the design phase. They can expect the BIM models contain factors like name conventions that help them group clashes or search components with ease. If you are not aware of your client’s expectations, don’t worry, the best way is frankly to talk to them to know more. By understanding the client requirements, you can optimize the implementation time of the project but still creating the deliverables meeting their expectations.

3. Self-do it all or outsourcing?

The Scan to BIM includes the process of capturing existing conditions as point cloud data and the creation of BIM models from these scanned data. So there are several ways to optimize the Scan to BIM process for the construction project.

If you are a 3D laser scanning company and hired for a project at school, of course, you can self-perform laser scanning processes and even create BIM models from point cloud data. However, you are completely able to optimize cost for the Scan to BIM project by choosing to outsource a part of the work and focus only on your strengths.

Partnering with a service provider, for example, specializing in BIM modeling from point cloud data may be a good choice. It provides more flexibility to solve varied works, approaching professionals with expertise in each area.

Vietnam win covid-19
ViBIM updates

Vietnam gains control over the second wave of COVID-19

After successfully controlling the first outbreak of the COVID-19, Vietnam had no new infected cases since mid-April, 2020. The country has settled into the “new normal” and focused on economic recovery. However, the first infection of the virus in the coastal city of Danang on 25th July make Vietnam suffered the second coronavirus wave. A strict lockdown was enforced in Danang. The travel in out of the city also was heavily restricted.

Nevertheless, by virtue of rapid responses from authorities, Vietnam can effectively beat the COVID-19 virus outbreak once again. Now, Vietnam has undergone days without any community transmission of the coronavirus.

Let’s take a look at how Vietnam responded to the COVID-19 epidemic, the resilience of Vietnam’s economy, and the shift of supply chain to the country amid the coronavirus crisis.

1. Vietnam’s response to its second COVID-19 outbreak

As aforementioned, the second wave of the COVID-19 happened in Vietnam at the end of July. Danang – a famous tourist destination in Vietnam detected a new case in the community. As usual, the Vietnamese government reacted quickly and strictly to the new outbreak. Since the source of the infection was unknown, Danang was lockdown immediately to avoid the spread in the community. Residents just left their homes for really essential activities. Some other cities also carried out mass rapid tests for returnees from Danang to detect the suspected cases in time. Flights to and from Danang has been suspended by the end of July.

In general, after a month, the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam has been controlled. To date, Vietnam has recorded a total of 1094 COVID-19 cases with about 35 fatalities. Vietnam has now enjoyed over three weeks without any community transmission, defeating the second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Like in the first wave, Vietnam has responded quickly and forcefully, said Professor Michael Toole, a research expert at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne

2. The resilience of Vietnam’s economy amid the COVID-19 epidemic

With the handling of the second COVID-19 outbreak, the Vietnamese government has focused on economic recovery. According to the World Bank’s Vietnam economy report, Vietnam’s economy continued to have a positive sign. Vietnam’s exports were stable with a 1.42% growth rate per month. Over the last eight months, Vietnam received 19.5 billion USD in FDI.

The International Monetary Fund still expected that Vietnam will grow 2.8% in spite of the Coronavirus crisis. The Vietnamese government has also introduced incentives to attract foreign investment and support business’s resilience.
vietnam's growth

Vietnam is still being expected to be one of the few countries that will continue to grow in 2020, said PricewaterhouseCoopers, an international consultancy firm

3. A shift of the supply chains to Vietnam

With opening economies to foreign investment, Vietnam is still considered an appealing investment destination for multinational companies worldwide. Quite a few companies are choosing Vietnam as an alternative sourcing option for other countries by virtue of its stable economic growth, competitive labor cost, tax incentives, convenient location, and technology updates. Economists also predict that many businesses are more likely to reevaluate their supply chains to reduce risk from future shocks.

Bonus: Shift the supply chain to Vietnam amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Why?

As for the construction industry, Fitch Solutions predicted that Vietnam’s building construction sector will grow at 7% over the next decade. Especially, the number of engineers in the construction industry in Vietnam surge. This will provide a huge workforce for foreign companies who are looking for outsourcing services in the Southeast Asia region.

BIM activities around the world 2020

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is not a trendy new technology. It has gone through some highlights in 2019. There is a positive sign that the industry has come and worked together around BIM to resolve some challenges. This also provides optimistic thinking about BIM prospects in 2020 worldwide. Several countries have also used BIM as the standard design framework for the industry. In the article, we will help to keep up to date with BIM activities in some countries in the world and understand more about the future of BIM technology.

1. BIM introduction

BIM was first introduced in the architectural research of Chuck Eastman in the 1970s. In 2002, Autodesk popularized the term to a wide audience in a white paper to define their strategy for their products.

Generally speaking, BIM is known as an advanced technology used in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry to increase collaboration amongst stakeholders involved in the project. BIM includes two things – functional characteristics in structural 3D models and a “database-first” approach to these models.

The approach lets AEC firms collaborate to design and analyze building systems quickly and efficiently. They can access and edit building information to the graphical files of a single dataset. Any changes made are automatically updated throughout all of the documentation. This helps to improve collaboration, reduce cost, increase quality control, and plan better. Besides, building owners and facility managers can use 3D models to manage and collect data on buildings and structures as well.

2. Understand BIM levels

BIM levels refer to levels of BIM maturity which range from Level 0 to Level 3 and beyond.

BIM Level 0 refers to the use of computer-aided designs (CADs) in the design process. There is no collaboration being done within the level. So according to the new UK regulations, the 2D CADs are now considered “BIM Level 0”.

BIM Level 1 is the most common level at which organizations are operating. It usually includes the use of 3D CAD for conceptual design, 2D for documentation. Despite the appearance of 3D modeling, the software was still limited by the “graphics-first” approach. So this is known as “BIM Level 1”.

BIM Level 2 is a new step that allows a team to use their own 3D CAD model. At the level, all CAD software must have the ability to export one of the common file formats such as Industry Foundation Class (IFC) or Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie). It’s required to create a Common Data Environment (CDE) which is effectively a shared data change place.

BIM Level 3 covers the true definition of BIM – “database-first”. With level 3, each party may access and edit a single and shared project model. Also, the level reduces the risk of conflicting information amongst all parties involved and disciplines.

3. BIM requirements in some countries 2020

BIM in the United Kingdom: Growth of BIM awareness

According to the prediction, the construction industry in the United Kingdom will grow by up to 70% by 2025. The United Kingdom is known as a leader in BIM implementation. The UK government mandated the use of BIM Level 2 for all construction projects funded by the government since early 2016. According to a survey of the National Building Specification (NBS) 2019, around 70% of respondents were aware of BIM. The figure was higher than that of 2011 with more than 10%.

The UK’s construction strategy declared that it would save 20% on procurement costs thanks to BIM adoption across the entire country. Multiple companies had to quickly find out the process to comply with the standards. The UK will be more likely to become a leader in BIM over the next few years. However, there will still be roadblocks to adoption they need to resolve in the next time.

BIM in the United States: new BIM standard version coming soon

BIM is more and more becoming a widespread requirement for construction projects in the United States. Due to the different requirements of each state, BIM implementation here varies on each project. Although there are several BIM guidelines in the United States, the industry lacks government BIM standards.

Currently, the National BIM Standard (NBIM-US) do their utmost to integrate different industry guidelines to create a unified set of procedures. It is supported by professional groups such as BuildSMART. They plan to release a new version late this year. NBIMS-US 4.0 will be a module so it can be expanded more easily and continually in the future.

Dodge Data & Analytics conducted an industry study on general contractors, construction managers, and specialty trades in 2019. The result showed that 89% of respondents use BIM on at least some of their projects. Several US states are now adopting BIM for projects of a certain scale. Wisconsin, for instance, requires the BIM on all new construction projects with the value of US $2.5 million or more.

BIM in Germany: Mandate in 2020

In Germany, the government is boosting the adoption of BIM across the country. It’s predicted that Germany can mandate BIM for all infrastructure projects by the end of 2020. To aid BIM implementation, a group of industry experts, large companies, and non-governmental organizations have teamed up to establish a German BIM Steering Group.

BIM in France: 2020 is witnessing a surge

The French government mandated the adoption of the BIM process for infrastructure projects in 2017. Currently, France is still on the roadmap to digitize its construction sector. The national government also launched the Digital Transition Plan. This aims at helping AEC firms optimize costs and improve sustainability. It is expected that BIM in France will continue to add value to the construction projects and improve the economy.

BIM in Australia: Expected BIM growth will be $6.5 billion by 2020

The adoption of the BIM process in Australia is still fragmented since there is no unified approach to it. There are 75% of construction projects using BIM. More than 60% of project experts are regular BIM users. A national not-for-profit organization (NATSPEC), owned by Government and Industry launched its BIM National Guide in September 2011. It is expected that BIM growth in Australia will be $6.5 billion by 2020.

BIM in Japan

A survey conducted by the Statista Research Department in 2019 showed that more than 17% of architecture companies in Japan were using BIM for their projects. BIM implementation in Japan is developing but not strategically unified. In general, Japanese firms are not keen on implementing BIM since their client does not recognize the benefits of BIM. BIM is still on the way to help stakeholders to reduce risk and uncertainty.

BIM in Singapore

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore implemented the BIM Roadmap in 2010. The government also aimed at 80% of the construction industry would use BIM in 2015. They had the policy to lead the BIM implementation, whereas clients in the private sector would evaluate the value and cost of BIM. It’s required for architects and engineers to use BIM for the design process.

Although this list is not exhaustive for every country, the information will help you get a great idea about the global BIM standards. If you have more information about your country, comment below and let us know!

Bonus: Spotlight on the Vietnamese BIM capability

The future of BIM technology

The benefits of BIM for the construction industry are inevitable. There are still challenges and overhead costs will be barriers for BIM implementation. However, if the AEC firms do not embrace the changes, they will lose the competitive edge and eventually go out of business.

The future of BIM is still a single source of a dataset that allows all parties to access and edit on the same data pool. The next step is to combine this 3D modeling with reality capture technology to deliver detailed models. It’s time to get started!

Shift the Supply Chain to Vietnam amid the COVID-19 pandemic?

The coronavirus disease has been conducive to the disruption of the global supply chain. No doubt, supply chains in every country across industries are affected. Many countries in Europe and the US have still struggled against the pandemic. Especially, the spread of COVID-19 made China shut down lots of factories and production lines. The COVID-19 crisis and the US-China trade tension encourage multi-national companies to plan for alternative sourcing strategies.

Economic experts have stated that the supply chain of the future no longer focuses on cost management but rather on developing a secure and resilient supply chain. In reality, the global supply chain has recently witnessed the shift of production lines from China to Vietnamese factories. So the reasons why foreign companies have been driving their production to Vietnam. This article will reveal our latest insights on the current situation, how Vietnam is becoming a new manufacturing hub for the global economy.

We highlight some key factors below. Keep reading on it to explore more interesting information.

1. Stable economic growth

In recent years, Vietnam has been one of the most dynamic economies in the Southeast Asia region. PwC’s The World in 2050 report forecasts that Vietnam will be one of the top 20 economies in the world by 2050.

In this time, Vietnam has done well to control the pandemic and reopen the economy. Although the COVID-19 has exerted a deleterious influence on the national economy, the Vietnamese government has also introduced policies to help businesses embrace the “new normal”.

2. Young workforce and competitive labor cost

With over 97 million people in mid the year 2020 (according to UN data), Vietnam ranks the 15th largest population in the world. 52% of the Vietnam population is of working age. According to a Nielsen market research firm, Vietnam’s middle class will grow to 44 million by 2020. This makes Vietnam become a new labor hub in the world.

Besides, compared to China, labor costs in Vietnam are more competitive. Manufacturers have witnessed an increase in wages in China so they are going to seek a market with lower labor costs. Also, Vietnam offers beneficial tax policies to attract foreign companies. Especially, with the recession of the global economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing costs are going to be one of the vital factors that impact the businesses’ decision.

3. Open economies to foreign investment

Vietnam has signed quite a few free trade agreements (FTAs) and been a member of international organizations including:

  • A member of the World Trade Organization (WTO);
  • The Free Trade Agreement with the European Union;
  • Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States;
  • A member of the ASEAN and ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA);

All these have shown that Vietnam is willing to integrate into the global economy and boost the country’s economic growth. These FTAs are expected to encourage openness, cooperation, and coordination. This will also create a stable environment for foreign companies to do business in Vietnam. Furthermore, the Vietnamese government offers numerous tax incentives for multinational companies to invest in special economic areas.

4. Convenient Location

As mentioned above, there are various factors to consider when choosing a BIM. Thanks to being situated in the center of ASEAN, Vietnam is considered a strategic area. With a long coastline, Vietnam offers convenient conditions for trading with other countries. Moreover, traveling to major European countries and the US cities are more and more convenient.

There are also flights to these destinations available throughout the day. Sometimes, the time difference is interesting. You might have a team working for you when you’re not at work.

5. Technology Updates

Several foreign companies ask themselves if can Vietnamese firms meet global quality standards for high-tech products? However, multinational companies like Samsung, LG have been relocating factories from China to Vietnam. Some other companies like Foxconn or other Apple suppliers have been planning to set up production facilities in Vietnam for many years.

It seems that the wave of the factory shift from China to Vietnam has started. Although the COVID crisis has been leading to certain difficulties for relocation, many investors still believe in their decisions for a long-term investment.

In conclusion

We hope that you now can understand why foreign companies have been shifting to Vietnam. Environmental, social, and governance factors will be important ones for success. Economists also predict that many businesses are likely to rethink their supply chains to reduce risks from future shocks.

LOD and LOI requirement
BIM for Architects, Scan to BIM

LOD and LOI and Everything You Need to Know

Are you currently working on a Scan to BIM project? Has your client asked you to produce a BIM model to ‘LOD 400’ or a specific Level of Information? If you don’t understand them thoroughly, then you may create the wrong model compared with the client’s requirements. So it’s necessary to understand the LOD and LOI requirements.

So what it really means and how do we meet all LOD and LOI requirements? Read on to find the answers or ask our BIM consultant to help you.

1. What are BIM LOD and other acronyms

In reality, there are several acronyms that sometimes can be difficult to understand or remember. LOD, LOI…what do they all mean? Before we even attempt to explain the difference between them and what they mean, we need to know what they stand for:

  • LOD: Level of Detail, demonstrates the graphical content of models
  • LOI: Level of Information, demonstrates the non-graphical content of models

As you know LOD 100, LOD 200, or LOD 300 are inputs based on geometry. LOD 400 can be achieved in the model from visual observations on the sitemap. The following examples will help you easily understand the difference between LOD and LOI.

LOD 1 – A Mass Model

The LOD 1 will be a Mass Model of the building, place, or structure. It will not contain doors or windows. This type of model is mainly the surface model.

ViBIM LOD 1

LOD 2 – Shell and Core Model

The LOD2 model will include main structural elements and the penetrations of the building such as floor panels, columns, beams, and basic structures of doors, windows.

ViBIM LOD 2

LOD 3 – Standard Survey Model

The LOD 3 model also consists of main Architectural details. The basic family can be created for doors and windows. Besides, the main objects can be modeled in the concept design. With LOD 3, the modeler also can create a simple model of the fixed furniture and accessories if required.

ViBIM LOD 3

LOD 4 – Detailed Survey Model

The LOD 4 model will contain Architectural elements and Structural details. The primary and auxiliary services can be modeled at a highly detailed level. Additional details may include baseboards, architecture, rails, and furnaces or surface.

ViBIM LOD 4

2. The benefits of accurate modeling according to LOD and LOI requirements

The level of detail is ranged from simple to complex in terms of geometry (LOD) and information (LOI).

So the 3D BIM models meeting the LOD and LOI requirements will enable you to have accurate and sufficient information on the BIM objects. This is of value to your next designing stage such as exporting drawings or extracting information from the model.

  • LOD 100 – Concept design
  • LOD 200 – Schematic design
  • LOD 300 – Detailed design
  • LOD 400 – Fabrication and assembly
  • LOD 500 – As-built model

Example 1: The wall requires LOD 1: The external walls are modeled as a block object

Example of LOD 1

Example 2: The wall requires LOD 2: The structural walls are modeled with an overall thickness.

Example of LOD 2

Example 3: The wall requires LOD 3: All walls are modeled with overall thickness.

Example of LOD 3

Example 4: The wall requires LOD 4: All walls are modeled with overall thickness and decorative details.

Example of LOD 4

The next example will help you know more about the LOD and LOI requirements of the MEP system:

  • LOD2: The modeler just needs to create the model of huge equipment as required;
  • LOD3:
    + Duct, Pipe, Cable tray will be modeled according to the fitting. For Valve, if the client requires the LOD 3, the modeler will create the model of the valve’s crank into a plane, but not include the bolts.
    + For mechanical equipment, the modeler will just need to create the model of the main structural objects, not including bolts, and small pipes. The MEP system will not include a hanger, except for being required.
  • LOD4: Create the 3D model of the MEP elements as required with a high level of detail: Duct, Pipe, Cable tray will be modeled according to the fitting. For Valve, if the client requires LOD 4, the modeler will create a detailed model of the valve’s crank and the bolts.

Example of MEP elements

3. How do we meet the LOD and LOI requirements?

For each point cloud to BIM project, we should clarify the LOD and LOI requirements from the client at the beginning stage of the project. Not just stop at the model level, you need to clearly understand the LOD and LOI requirements of each object.

In the process of modeling, the modeler might use the 3D view, the section to check LOD, and use Schedule to analyze LOI requirements. Besides, the modeler themselves should improve their knowledge and stay updated with the information on LOD and LOI.

LOD requirement

A BIM project can have various LOD and LOI requirements that are applied to each area or position. So it’s necessary for the modeler to understand them to model exactly.

In conclusion

The terms have been devised as a means to help communication within a BIM project run more smoothly. So it’s important to understand and meet the exact LOD and LOI requirements. Hopefully, you’ll have a better understanding of what this means. If you still have questions on the topic, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
